Ann was born to two old money parents in Pennsylvania, the youngest of four siblings and the only girl on a large farm outside Pittsburgh. She was nurtured in everything by her father, receiving art lessons from a relatively young age, and even when she at the age of 14 began to wear trousers and cut her hair short, he stood by. When she said she wanted to study art, he overheard her mother's objections and sent her to the nearest (and best) art school he could find, PAFA in Philadelphia, where she worked primarily in painting.

Knowing she was only attracted to girls, but also knowing Pennsylvania wasn't the place to be too open about this, Ann dated a fellow while at college and he was loyal and fascinated enough with her to agree to cover for her. Jack, they're still friends. He works out of Washington these days.

Her last year of art school, 1930-1931, she was sent on a study trip to Madrid, Spain, where she spent eleven months developing her style and becoming acquainted with Spanish art, especially with Picasso. She also learned to speak fluent Spanish.

After finishing art school with high marks, she told her father she wanted to set up a studio in New York. Her father didn't blink, but made all arrangements before sending her off. He probably knew she'd never return.

In New York, Ann worked hard to make a name for herself and quickly caught the attention of several galleries and museums, among the interested parties Hector Snyder, a 50 year old art collector and architect, who only needed being told no once before he had a good idea what was up with Ms. Johnston. He made a deal with Ann, as a result, telling her he would marry her and make all his funds available to her, thereby obscuring her sexuality, but then she had to give him a child.

All of five seconds, Ann looked at him, then told him that she would agree, if he in turn promised her not to take more than a few minutes of her time for her efforts. Their relationship would be like that, platonic but fond. They were great supports for each other until the end of Hector's life.

And Ann kept her promise, while building up her portfolio, she bore him a son, Tommy, who would be the apple of his father's eye and begrudgingly, his mother would admit she felt the same way.

Now, 36 years old, Tommy having just turned 10, Ann is finally beginning to break through with her paintings and selling to galleries all over America.
